Chandelier Size Guide: How Big, How High, and How Many

The Art of Choosing the Right Chandelier
The perfect light doesn't simply illuminate a room. It finishes it.
There is something transformative about a beautifully chosen chandelier. It draws the eye, creates atmosphere and gives a room its finishing touch. Yet even the most exquisite fixture can feel out of place when the proportions aren't quite right.
The secret? Finding the balance between scale, architecture and the way you live.
A Matter of Proportion
A simple designer's trick is to add the length and width of your room in feet. The total, expressed in inches, gives you an approximate chandelier diameter.
For example, a 12-by-14-foot room suits a chandelier around 26 inches wide, while a generous 16-by-18-foot living space may call for something closer to 34 inches.
Of course, rules are made to be interpreted. Soaring ceilings, expansive windows and open-concept spaces often benefit from a more dramatic statement.
Setting the Scene
Above a dining table, a chandelier should feel intimate without overwhelming the setting. Aim for a fixture approximately half to two-thirds the width of your table, suspended 30–36 inches above its surface.
In the kitchen, pendants bring both function and personality. Whether you choose two sculptural fixtures or a series of smaller lights, allow approximately 30–36 inches between the countertop and the bottom of each pendant.
For living rooms and entryways, think about how the fixture is experienced from every angle. Allow at least seven feet of clearance in areas where people walk beneath it.
The Finishing Touch
The most memorable interiors aren't defined by measurements alone. They're shaped by thoughtful choices—how a finish catches the light, how a silhouette complements the architecture and how a room feels when evening arrives.
At Niagara Light & Living, we believe the right lighting should feel as beautiful as it is effortless.
